Defense Against a Choke on the Ground

A claw is one of the many weapons you can use.

Make no mistake about it – if you find yourself on the ground and someone is sitting on top choking you, you'e in a lethal self defense situation. With only seconds before you pass out, you don’t have the time to find out whether he wants to control you or whether he wants to kill you. You must act.

With most of his body weight pushing down on your throat, defending yourself from this position isn’t easy. However, there are some things you can do.

Anyone attacking with intent will press his head and chest very close (so he can add more pressure to the choke). That leaves you with some options.

Force your chin down against his hands to minimize the area of your throat he can attack. Doing so may also allow you to curl your throat away from his grip. It also puts pressure on his hands, hopefully weakening his attack.

Bend your knees so that your feet can push down on the ground. You now have 6 crucial pivot points from which you can lift, twist and push in order to escape – both of your feet, your left and right hip plus your shoulders. These pivot points will also empower your strikes.

I always recommend multiple self defense techniques. Immediately claw the eyes. Don’t hold back. Blind him, if you can, with about a dozen repetitions, then tear at his ears and his hair. Attack his throat, repeatedly. Adam’s apple, the hollow of his throat…whatever is exposed. Eyes, hair, ears, throat, groin – “machine gun” all these targets as if you have endless rounds of bullets!

Remember your pivots points. As you strike, push and twist up from your feet, hips and shoulders. Left to right, right to left, up and down. Every part of your body is involved, from every possible angle. By now, he feels as though he’s made the mistake of attacking 4 or 5 people at one time!

If you feel his hands loosening, bite his hands. Hold on to them with your teeth and twist your head from side to side…like a shark. All the while, you are still attacking his eyes, nose, ears, hair, throat, groin…and twisting sideways and up and down on your pivot points.

If his head and chest rear away, attack his groin…repeatedly. If he rolls off, roll over on him and finish his eyes, groin, even the sides of his knees. Do not leave him with an opportunity to chase you. Now make your escape.

It’s unfortunate that we have to reply to an attack with such cruelty. It’s also unfortunate to have your life cut short by someone who feeds on other human beings in order to…what?...satisfy some craving. Is that what your life is worth, food for someone else’s cravings?

That’s why I encourage my students to rethink how they allow others to treat them, even casually. I teach my students to stand up for themselves in all aspects of life. I encourage them to speak up whenever something is wrong. I remind them to value themselves.

It is from valuing your place in the world that the fuel for self defense comes.
