Learn the Ancient Art of Kenjutsu
(Classical Japanese Swordsmanship)

Yagyu Shinkage Ryu (The New Shadow Style of the Yagyu Clan)
Yagyu Shinkage Ryu (c. 1570) is one of the oldest and most elegant styles of classical Japanese sword-fighting. It has a glamour and prestige that is second to none because it was the official sword style of the famous Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. While many have heard of it by reputation, few have seen it since it was a style reserved only for the Shogun and his clan. Come and experience this rare art which has been handed down in secret from generation to generation for over 500 years. Only recently have outsiders been allowed to see it, much less study it.

Instructor: Douglas Tong
Mr. Tong lived in Japan and studied Japanese swordsmanship under some of the great masters. Mr. Tong studied three of the most renowned styles: the One-Sword style (Ono-ha Itto Ryu) with Master Takemi Sasamori, the New Shadow style (Yagyu Shinkage Ryu) under the late Master Masao Mutoh, and the style of the War God of Katori (Katori Shinto Ryu) under the late Master Yoshio Sugino. Mr. Tong was one of the last direct pupils of the legendary
Master Yoshio Sugino, who was the swordfight choreographer for two of Akira Kurosawa’s most celebrated samurai films, Seven Samurai and Yojimbo. Due to his apprenticeship in Japan and from 25 years of study, Mr. Tong brings an expert knowledge of the ancient art of classical Japanese swordfighting.
